Imposter Syndrome
30th May 2025
"This is far too difficult! Should I just give up?"
If you're new to this career path in any form of software development, then I hear you. Sometimes it feels great! You've made gains, you're learning tons and it's all stored up there in your overloaded brain, and it feels so good!!!
Then, 🤯!
Imposter syndrome has crept in or has fully taken over 😈.

The most important thing at this point is to remember, remember that this is completely normal. It happens to everyone, in every industry.

I've not always wanted to code or be a software developer, I was a chef. Spending twenty years doing that job. There were times during my career that imposter syndrome popped its head up and said you're no good or you can't do this. But, it wasn't anything like what I have experienced in software developing.
I do take a lot of things from the two career paths and they do line up together. I look at it this way, lines of code are the ingredients, functions are just like the main part of a dish, and everything surrounding those functions are what makes it complete. Sometimes things don't go right together, they could be refined to make it better.
That's where you learn. Imposter syndrome is normal and you can actually take a lot of positives from it, obviously once it has subsided that is.

So no matter where you are in your journey, it's likely to creep in at some point. You will get through it. Recognising it is the first step, then keep your head up and work through it while remembering to give yourself a break. You'll find at the end that you have gained knowledge during this process. There are lots of resources out there to help, whether online, work colleagues, or friends and family.

Just remember to reach out when you need help or support, don't let imposter syndrome consume you. Even people with no coding experience can help. Talk to them, it really does help!
